Palomar Products wins P-3 CUP Program

March 2001 - March 2001 - Palomar Products has been selected by the U.S. Navy (NAVAIR) to provide the Intercommunications Systems (ICS) for the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN) P-3 Capability Upkeep Program (CUP). In this upgrade program, seven of ten aircraft will be modernized based on the US Navy's Anti-surface warfare Improvement Program (AIP). The CUP program includes installation of satellite communication systems, secure communication systems, missile warning receivers, countermeasures dispensing systems, cockpit enhancements and replacement of the acoustic receiver and processor system and the data management system. The other three aircraft will be modernized with fewer capabilities and will mainly be used for counter drug operations in the Caribbean. The Palomar Products AN/AIC-34 will provide the secure communications. Identical interphone units will be used in both aircraft configurations.

The P-3 CUP ICS adds a new feature for P-3 operators. The A330 Sonar Select Panels are being removed and their function is being added to the Palomar LCCDU units that are being provided to five operator positions. The LCCDU units are binaural and provide wide bandwidth audio to the headsets. Any LCCDU operator will be able to choose any combination of processed sonar audio, raw sonar audio and filtered raw sonar audio. The operator will be able to choose which ear to route each audio source. This audio will also be available for a CSU operator to monitor if desired.

The P-3 CUP ICS will also have a new unit - the Audio Control Unit (ACU). It has the same circuitry as a CSU, but is only 2.625 inches high and four inches deep. It is a drop-in replacement (size) for the small crew units used by existing AN/AIC-22 observer positions. Each shipset will have five of these units, five LCCDUs and two CSUs.
